Clearer unit pricing for everyday shopping
Supermarkets often display unit pricing, but it can be difficult to read, inconsistent across products, or too small to use confidently at the shelf. PricePer100 is a consumer information project designed to make product value easier to compare.
Search products
Search by product, brand, category or retailer and compare products using the same unit of measure.
Scan barcodes
Where reliable product data is available, barcode lookup can help identify a product and show comparable alternatives.
Read larger prices
The unit price should be prominent and readable, especially for elderly shoppers and people with visual impairment.
Compare by the measure that matters
A larger pack is not always better value. A promotion is not always the cheapest option. Unit pricing helps shoppers compare like-for-like.
Food and groceries
per 100gCompare coffee, cereal, pasta, rice, cheese, meat, pet food and other products where pack sizes differ.
Drinks and liquids
per litreCompare milk, soft drinks, oils, cleaning liquids and products sold in millilitres or litres.
Household products
per washCompare laundry capsules, dishwasher tablets, nappies, sheets, wipes and other count-based products.
| Example product | Pack size | Shelf price | Comparable unit price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product A | 500g | £2.25 | 45p per 100g |
| Product B | 750g | £3.00 | 40p per 100g |
| Product C multipack | 2 x 400g | £3.50 | 43.75p per 100g |
Illustrative example only. A live service should show retailer, source and last-checked date for each price.
Built for accessibility
Many shoppers cannot easily read small shelf-edge unit prices. PricePer100 should prioritise large text, high contrast, simple navigation and plain-English comparison pages.
The project is particularly relevant to elderly shoppers, carers, low-income households, students, visually impaired consumers and community support organisations.
per 100g
The important price should be obvious, not hidden in small print.
Join the Price Transparency Project
PricePer100 welcomes discussions with retailers, brands, data providers, charities, councils, consumer groups and responsible commercial partners.
The aim is constructive: to help consumers understand the real price of what they buy.
Partners may support by:
- providing accurate product and pricing data;
- sponsoring accessible consumer tools;
- supporting unit-pricing education resources;
- improving barcode and product matching;
- participating in clearer price-transparency standards.
